The “Baba Sali” synagogue stands at 16 Alexander Yannai Street

The story

The “Baba Sali” synagogue stands at 16 Alexander Yannai Street, in Neighborhood Dalet of Beersheba, and is listed in the register of synagogues of the city's Religious Council. It is named after Rabbi Israel Abuhatzeira, who was born in the town of Rissani in the Tafilalt district of Morocco on Rosh Hashanah 5650, September 1889, and died on 4 Shevat 5744, January 1984. His father was Rabbi Masoud Abuhatzeira, the firstborn of Rabbi Yaakov Abuhatzeira, author of the “Abir Yaakov”, and the Abuhatzeira family was known as a dynasty of rabbis and kabbalists. At the age of eighteen he was appointed head of the yeshiva in Rissani, and in the year 5700, 1939, he was called to serve as head of the rabbinical court in Erfoud. In 1951 he immigrated with his family to Israel and lived in the Baka neighborhood of Jerusalem, afterwards he stayed for years abroad, and in 1964 he returned to the country. In 1970 he moved to Netivot and there he lived until his death. After his death his grandson, Rabbi Elazar Abuhatzeira, established a hasidic court in Beersheba on Cyprus Street — the Baba Elazar court in Neighborhood Heh. Thus there stand in Beersheba two places connected with this family: the synagogue on Alexander Yannai Street, and the Baba Elazar court on Cyprus Street. The gabbai listed in the register is Elkana Vodbaker.
