Rabbi Amram Ben Diwan Synagogue

The story

The synagogue “Rabbi Amram Ben Diwan” stands at 18 Bar Giora Street, in Neighborhood Dalet of Beersheba, and is listed in the register of synagogues of the city's Religious Council. Rabbi Amram ben Ephraim Diwan was born in Jerusalem in the year 5500, to a family of rabbis whose origin is in the town of Diwan in Morocco. He studied in Morocco at the “Neve Shalom” yeshiva of his uncle, Rabbi Yehuda bar Amram Diwan, and afterwards settled in Hebron. In the year 5523, 1763, the community of Hebron sent him as a shadar to Morocco, that is, as an emissary who collects donations for the kollel; in the letter of appointment the notables of Hebron crowned him with the titles “the complete sage, Sinai and uprooter of mountains”. He went round the communities of Israel throughout Morocco, gathered the donations and returned to the Land of Israel. In the year 5534, 1774, he went out on a second mission and remained on it for more than eight years, most of them in Meknes. On his way back, on 15 Av 5542, 1782, he died and was buried in the cemetery of the village of Asjen near Ouezzane. His grave became a place of pilgrimage for tens of thousands each year, and an annual hillula is held at it. The gabbai listed in the register of the Religious Council is Daniel Wanunu.
