Kaye Academic College of Education

The story

Kaye Academic College of Education, known in the city simply as “Kaye College”, is a college for teacher training in the northwest of Beersheba. Its name commemorates Geoffrey Kaye, who donated the funds for the building of the main building on the campus. Teacher training at the place begins in 1954: the book of the college's history, written by Tzipi Shohory-Rubin and published by the college itself, carries the title “Fifty Years of Teacher Training in the Negev, 1954–2004”. At the college a bachelor's degree in education is studied in the tracks of kindergarten, elementary school, post-elementary school, special education, physical education, and art and digital media. Two of the tracks say something about the place in which it stands: a training track for the elementary school in the Bedouin sector, and the program “Netivim مسارات” for educational-environmental leadership in the Negev, whose name is written in Hebrew and in Arabic. It also has programs for a master's degree, among them diversity and educational equality, education in the age of information technologies, physical education and sport for excluded and at-risk populations, and early childhood education. The pre-academic preparatory program was set up in 1989 and about six hundred students study in it each year; it is intended for those who wish to study teaching at the college and do not meet the admission conditions for the academic program, and it opens twice a year, in September and in February. The college publishes an online peer-reviewed journal in Hebrew, “Lexi-Kaye”, an emerging lexicon in matters of education and teacher training.
