Artzieli Square

The story

Artzieli Square, also known as the Harp Square, stands in Neighborhood Bet of Beersheba, at the meeting of Yaakov Cohen Street and Leonard Bernstein Street, and was dedicated on 6 February 2018. At its center is a steel harp six meters high, the work of the artist Israel Primo. The square carries the name of Mordechai Artzieli (18 September 1924 – 16 April 2004), a journalist at the newspaper Haaretz who was known as “the voice of the south”. Artzieli was a member of the executive committee of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, a member of the board of the Israel Sinfonietta Beersheba and a member of the board of the Beersheba Theatre, and founded “Shabtarbut”, the first interview and hosting program of its kind in Israel, which he presented continuously for about thirteen years, between 1973 and 1986. The program took place at the municipal conservatory, and that is the reason the harp stands here: the square is close to the municipal conservatory and to the Performing Arts Center. The square is one of about fifty squares of Beersheba that have a name of their own and carry a sculpture, a fountain or invested landscaping, out of more than two hundred and fifty traffic circles in the city.
