The Light Square

The story

The Light Square, also called Shraga Segal Square, stands in the Ramot neighborhood of Beersheba, at the meeting of Uri Zvi Greenberg Boulevard, Yaakov Marsh Street and Ha-Da'at Street, and its year is 2013. The work at its center was made by the sculptor Paula Ovadia. The square carries the name of Professor Shraga Segal (1939–2006), founder and dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev between 1994 and 2000 and deputy rector of the university. Segal headed the department of microbiology, immunology and genetics in the faculty, was president of the Israeli Society for Immunology and chairman of the Council for Animal Experimentation, and researched cancer. The square stands close to the university campus, and Ha-Da'at Street that meets in it carries a name that suits what happens around it. The square is one of about fifty squares of Beersheba that have a name of their own and carry a sculpture, a fountain or invested landscaping, out of more than two hundred and fifty traffic circles in the city, and a large part of them commemorate people who did something in this city.
