HaMofet Square

The story

HaMofet Square, known also as the Tank Square, stands in the Neve Ze'ev neighborhood, at the junction of Naftali Herz Imber Boulevard, Rabbi Eliyahu Katz Boulevard and Hativa Shmone Street. At its center stands a tank, and it commemorates the memory of two officers who fell in the Second Lebanon War and are buried one beside the other in the military cemetery in Beersheba. Capt. (res.) Dr. Igor Rotstein (10 September 1971 – 4 August 2006) was the physician of the 13th Battalion in the 1st Brigade, and fell in battle in the area of the village of Markaba. After his death he was awarded the Medal of Distinguished Service. Capt. Shai (Shaike) Bernstein (10 June 1982 – 12 August 2006) was born in Beersheba and was the commander of an armored company in the 9th Battalion of the 401st Brigade. He fell after he had led the battalion in Wadi Saluki, and after his death he was awarded a citation. Both fell in the rank of captain, and on the maps of the city the square is called also the Captains' Square. It is one of the many squares of Beersheba that bear a name and a designed element — in the city there are more than two hundred and fifty traffic circles, and about fifty of them have a name of their own and a sculpture, a fountain or invested landscaping.
