The Graves of David and Paula Ben-Gurion

The story

On the edge of the Zin cliff, close to Midreshet Ben-Gurion in Sde Boker, David and Paula Ben-Gurion are buried. Paula died on 29 January 1968 and was buried here the next day, and David Ben-Gurion died on 1 December 1973 and was buried at her side two days after that. In May 1974 a competition was held for the planning of the site; a committee of thirteen judges examined fifty-four proposals, and the proposal of the landscape architects Lipa Yahalom and Dan Zur was chosen. The garden extends over ninety dunams, and a winding path leads in it to the plaza of the graves. The two gravestones are plain, without a long inscription, and the plaza before them is open entirely to the landscape: below, the canyon of Nahal Zin spreads out, and beyond it the Negev Highlands.
