Segev Shalom

The story

Segev Shalom (Arabic: شقيب السلام, Shaqib as-Salam) is a Bedouin local council southeast of Beersheba, and the Bedouin locality closest to the city. It was founded in 1979 within the plan for the establishment of seven permanent localities for the Bedouin of the Negev — Rahat, Tel Sheva, Kuseife, Lakiya, Hura, Ar'arat an-Naqab and Segev Shalom. Its Hebrew name joins Nahal Sagiv, beside which it sits, and the peace agreement with Egypt that was signed in that same year; its Arabic name, Shaqib as-Salam, parallels it. In 1988 the locality was joined to the Masos Regional Council, the first Bedouin regional council in Israel. The council was dissolved in 1996, and in Segev Shalom a local council was established, at the head of which stands today the council head Qaid Abu Muammar. Its area of jurisdiction is about 13,540 dunams. According to the estimate of the Central Bureau of Statistics for the middle of 2026, 17,380 residents live in it, and it is the 126th largest locality in Israel; almost all of them are Muslim Arabs. Eight schools operate in the locality, in which about 5,634 pupils study.
