Beersheba Skatepark

The story

The Beersheba skatepark is an adventure-sport complex for the hours of leisure, used mainly by skateboard and rollerblade riders. It stands in Kiryat Meir Betz, at the western exit of the city, at the meeting of Derech David Tuviyahu and Derech Ilan Ramon streets, next to the country club, and it opened to the general public in the month of August 2013. The complex was built on the initiative of the mayor Ruvik Danilovich and in cooperation with Mifal HaPayis, at a cost of about 7.5 million shekels. It extends over an area of about 2,800 square meters, was designed by Avi Luzia and built by the Mordechai Israel company of moshav Sdei Trumot, and according to the Hebrew Wikipedia it is among the largest and finest in Israel. It has ramps, walls, stairs and inclined surfaces. The skatepark was not built by itself. It was established as part of a larger sports complex, which has mini-football pitches, surfaces for fitness apparatus and cycling tracks, and in planning also volleyball and beach football courts. On the grounds were installed lighting for night activity, public-address equipment and preparation for events with many participants — that is, it was built from the outset also as a place in which a crowd gathers, and not only as a facility in which one trains. The junction on which it sits bears two names of this city: Derech David Tuviyahu, after the mayor in whose time Beit HIAS was bought for the institute from which the university grew, and Derech Ilan Ramon, after the first Israeli astronaut.
