Dimona Theater named after Leon Edri

The story

The Dimona Theater is a repertory theater that was established in 2009, within the framework of the "Payis Laboratories for Culture" — an enterprise of the Payis Council for Culture and Art meant to encourage creation in the periphery, with five laboratories throughout the country. At first the theater was housed in a sports hall in a building that had formerly served as a school. In 2011 it moved to a new building in the Kovshei Eilat neighborhood, put up with the funding of Mifal HaPayis; the performance hall was built as a black box theater, the second of its kind in Israel. Within the framework of the project several actors and directors moved to live in Dimona and established here a theater that puts on original productions every year, together with the local community. Among the founders are the general manager Mika Yizraelovich and the director Noa Raban, who also served as artistic director. The first production, "Tzirei Dagim", inspired by Brecht's "The Wedding", went up in 2010; after it came "Yeled HaKruvit", after the book by Yehonatan Geffen, which was premiered at the Israel Festival in 2011, and others. The theater has an ensemble of permanent actors who live in the city, and it also works in theater clubs, in local festivals and in productions for the kindergartens.
