Oron Cinema

The story

The Oron cinema was inaugurated in Arad in 1980, and with a capacity of seven hundred and fifty seats it was among the largest in Israel, like the “Shahaf” cinema in Tel Aviv. It was this hall that held the cultural life of the city in the 1980s. With its opening more than one thousand five hundred subscriptions were bought to the annual theater series of “Tarbut LaAm”, which brought to Arad six to eight performances a year of the best theaters of Israel — and because the subscriptions were more than the seats, every performance was staged twice. In 1981 the musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” went up on the stage of the Oron, in a joint production of the Cameri Theater with the Arad theater group, the Arad orchestra and the people of the city. On behalf of the Cameri took part Sassi Keshet, Tiki Dayan and Albert Cohen; Eli Ziv, one of the founders of the city and editor of the local paper “Kidod”, was the producer, and Rachel Ziv was the wardrobe mistress. The show was staged five times in Arad and afterwards also in Tel Aviv, in the Cameri Theater itself.
