Yeruham Community Center

The story

The community center of Yeruham stands in the center of the locality, and into its façade is set an art wall of ceramic that Moshe Saidi created in 1988 — one of a cluster of walls that are set also in the municipal library and in the sports hall. Yeruham is marked by different communities and by strong communal involvement, made up of sub-communities of different ethnic origins and at different levels of religious observance. Out of them many initiatives grew: "Atid BaMidbar", which set up the project "HaMevashlot shel Yeruham"; the science center and the robotics program; a center for the elderly for immigrants from the Commonwealth of Independent States; a branch of Yad Sarah; a branch of Bnei Akiva which also set up a charity fund; a troop of the Scouts; and "Kvutzat Mirkam Ezori", which works for dialogue and mutual responsibility with the Bedouin residents of the area. In 2005 Michael Biton set up the association "Tzeirim BeYeruham". In the town festivals are held that are meant to connect the communities, among them the "Paamei Midbar" festival of piyyut and the Docaviv Negev festival.
