Nekarot Fortress

The story

Nekarot Fortress is a Nabataean archaeological site in the Negev Highlands, in Nahal Nekarot east of Makhtesh Ramon. It is one of the fortresses that the Nabataeans established along the Incense Route between Avdat and the Arava, in a chain intended to guard the caravans and to supply them with water and shelter at intervals of a day's walk. In 2005 Nekarot Fortress was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, together with the Kazra, Makhmal, Grafon and Moa fortresses, the khans of Moa and Saharonim, and the four cities of the Incense Route in the Negev — Avdat, Shivta, Mamshit and Halutza. The inscription was made according to criteria three and five of the convention, and the area of the whole inscribed site is 6,655 hectares, and alongside it a buffer zone of 63,868 hectares.
