The Children's Park

The story

The Children's Park extends over sixty dunams in the Neve Menachem neighborhood, at the foot of the Lunada children's museum, and it opened in 2017. At its center is a lake of five thousand five hundred square meters into which ornamental fish and ducks were brought, and beside it play equipment — including equipment accessible to those with special needs — shading, an amphitheater, a waterfall, a zip line, a pirate ships area and cycling and walking paths. The Beersheba municipality built it at a cost estimated at about thirty-five million shekels, part of it from donations and from the budgets of Mifal HaPayis. The park was designed by the architect Israel Tzvik. He and his daughter, of the office Tzvik Architecture and Environmental Design, entered the competition against the large planning offices in the country and submitted to the selection committee a plan of the park of their dreams — drawn and colored by hand. That plan won. Israel Tzvik died on 3 July 2015, in the week in which the construction works began. A lake in the middle of this city is not self-evident, and it is one end of a wider project, the urban desert oasis, which added to Beersheba dozens of water elements, fountains and waterfalls and three artificial lakes.
