Ship of the Desert

The story

“Ship of the Desert” is a sculpture by Reuven Sharaf, one of the thirty-nine sculptures of the Sculpture Route at Hatzerim. It stands in the eastern part of the route, about two hundred and thirty meters east of the sculptures “Sun” and “Offering” and about nine hundred meters from Kibbutz Hatzerim. The placing of the sculptures along the route and on the hills around it began in the year 2000, on the initiative of the artist and curator Marga Fishtein and her husband Israel, who invited Israeli artists to place in the field works that relate to the environment and to the space; the process of curating has continued since and has not stopped. From time to time metal sculptures are stolen from the site, and a move is made to renew them or to place others in their stead.
