Ras Jaraba

The story

Ras Jaraba is an unrecognized village east of Dimona, on lands of the Israel Land Authority and inside the area of jurisdiction of the city. It extends over about three hundred and forty dunams, divided into ten neighborhoods, and ninety nuclear families of Bedouin who are counted with the al-Hawashla tribe and other families live in it. In the words of the families they have lived in the place for many tens of years, and the area of the village is part of the lands of the al-Hawashla tribe, which has lived here for hundreds of years. The village came into the headlines following a suit of the Israel Land Authority to evacuate it, in order to allow the planning of a new neighborhood of Dimona within the “Dimona East” plan. In 2023 the Magistrates' Court in Beersheba accepted the position of the Authority and approved its plan. The Adalah Center submitted an appeal in the name of the people of the village, which was rejected in the District Court in Beersheba. The defense claim of the people of the village rests on section 156 of the Land Law 5729-1969, which preserves rights that existed on the eve of the law's coming into force: according to their claim they settled on the land before 1969, and therefore they have preserved rights in it.
