Avraham Avinu Street

The story

Avraham Avinu Street runs in the north of Beersheba, in the area of Neighborhood Dalet, and it is the longest of the three patriarch streets of the city: it runs on a north–south axis for about nine hundred meters. To its south, on approximately the same axis, are Yaakov Avinu Street and Yitzhak Avinu Street, and the whole cluster extends over less than a kilometer — three names of patriarchs, in residential neighborhoods built in the new city, one after the other. The names are not accidental precisely here: according to the Book of Genesis Beersheba is the place where Abraham and Abimelech made their covenant and the two of them swore, and at the gates of the Old City, about three kilometers south of this street, stands Abraham's Well, which tradition attributes to Abraham. Thus the biblical layer of Beersheba appears in two places and in two forms — once in stone, and once on a street sign.
