The Dimona Railway Station

The story

The railway station of Dimona is the southernmost station of Israel Railways, and the terminus of the line from Beersheba. The track itself continues southward as far as Har Tzin. The first station was inaugurated on 8 September 1965, after about eight years of intermittent track-laying works between Beersheba and Dimona, in a journey that set out from Tel Aviv with a hundred and forty invited guests. At first only freight trains passed on the line, carrying phosphates from the Negev and potash from the Dead Sea. A passenger service was inaugurated on 25 March 1967, mostly two trains a day in each direction, and was stopped in 1978. The present station was opened on 17 December 2005, about a kilometer outside the city, next to the locomotive depot. The line runs at a low frequency, and in 2009 it was the station with the smallest number of passengers in Israel Railways, about eighty a day. There is a plan to move the station eastward, beside Route 25 at the entrance to the city, within a transport center; the plan was approved for deposit in the district committee at the beginning of 2021.
