Sapir High School, Yeruham

The story

The high school of Yeruham was established in 1975 and is named after Shoshana Sapir, the wife of the finance minister Pinhas Sapir, who died in 1971. Until then there was no state high school in Yeruham, and the pupils went out to study in high schools in the surroundings. In 1984 the school joined the ORT network, and in 2018 it passed to the franchise holder Darka. In the past vocational tracks were taught in it — carpentry, hairdressing, clerical work, accountancy, home economics, metalwork and building plumbing; today the main tracks are physics and chemistry, hotel management, communications, software engineering and mechatronics. Until the nineteen-nineties the percentage of those entitled to a matriculation certificate in the school was very low. In 1996 the project "Kol Ehad Yakhol" began in it, and the percentage of those entitled leapt: in 2013 it was seventy-two percent, and in 2022 ninety-eight. Between 2013 and 2022 the school was included in the list of recipients of the "Beit HaSefer HaErki" prize of the Ministry of Education. This is the only state high school in Yeruham, and about three hundred and sixty pupils study in it.
