Lakiya

The story

Lakiya (Arabic: لقية) is a Bedouin locality in the northern Negev, north of Beersheba. Its planning began in 1974, and it was established in 1990 within the government plan for the establishment of permanent localities for the Bedouin population in the Negev. Living in it are members of several tribes — al-Sana, which is the largest among them, al-Asad, al-Badur, Abu Saad, Abu Ayish and Abu Maharab. The area of its jurisdiction is 7,040 dunams, and according to the estimate of the Central Bureau of Statistics for the middle of 2026 about 20,400 residents live in it; the annual rate of growth is 3.9 percent. The serving head of the council since April 2024 is Sharif al-Asad. In Lakiya the Bedouin weaving association operates, known by the name “Desert Embroidery”, which is a community initiative of women for the preservation of the craft of weaving and for a livelihood from it.
